Wild Rose Hunting Retriever Club Clagary
Well Saturday, May the 9th was a great day for the Seven Singles event held at Larry Dupuis’ property outside of Strathmore. The day started off with a lot of dogs getting aired, and then right down to business. The Calcutta started off slow as the bidders watched each other for weakness but quickly heated up as the favourites to win came onto auction block. And thanks to some tricky tactics by our President and auctioneer there were very few dogs that did not at least get some confidence money put down on them.

The first mark was a long but fairly simple retrieve into light cover with no obstacles that I could notice. The second mark was a pretty straight forward retrieve but with a difficult, “busy back drop” situation that would certainly test the marking of any dog. The third, took place in the same area as the second mark but was rather tricky by pushing the dogs past the scent of the old fall. This caused some confusion for several veteran dogs but those that stayed into the wind made it through. There was funny flub while running the demonstration of the third mark. Check out the video following this article to see just what happened.

2009-Seven-Singles - The GloryCongratulations are in order for our big winners.
Jackie Hastie and her dog Cheetah, took home the trophy and the glory. I cannot confirm this rumor but it was said that Cheetah is the first golden to win this event. Certainly something to make Jackie very proud.

The winner of the Calcutta at the Seven singles was Beth Barrett.
2009-Seven-Singles - The GreenThe suspect was last seen on foot, fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash. It was said that she had some help in her bidding strategy from an unnamed young man.

Special thanks to Larry Dupuis, Mary Shillabeer for their organization efforts and to Nancy Johnsson for the great lunch.

Video action of the third mark can be seen here. Apologies that the commentary is in Spanish, I have provided subtitles for those non Spanish speakers.
