Swimmers tail in Sport Dogs or A tale of tails.

You may be finishing up a hard training session or just about to call it a day on a late season duck hunt, then suddenly you notice that something is wrong with your retriever. They seem not be moving their tail or showing some signs of soreness in the tail base area.
If your hunting buddy’s tail seems to be painful or not moving like it should your dog may have developed a condition known as Limber Tail Syndrome, also known as “Swimmers Tail”, “Dead Tail”, “Cold Water Tail” or even “Broken Wag”.

There was a better than expected turnout for the Licensed NAHRA Field Test put on by the Wild Rose Hunting Retriever Club the weekend of July 11th & 12th.
The test was held just outside of Irricana and drew several owners and handlers from all over. In fact it was so successful that the club as able to realize a cool profit of $1100.
When asked what the club was going to do with all that cash, club president Doug Rowden, hinted at various possible club improvements but did not go into detail. ![]()

If you’ve been out to the club training grounds in the last little while you may have noticed some work is being done.
Earlier this year we had been asking for clean fill for building some mounds to enhance the natural terrain of the grounds.
The mounds have been strategically placed to diversify use of the grounds. They are in the process of being landscaped and seeded, so use is not recommended until next year.
Great deal of thanks goes to Ron Adlington for getting this done.

Well Saturday, May the 9th was a great day for the Seven Singles event held at Larry Dupuis’ property outside of Strathmore. The day started off with a lot of dogs getting aired, and then right down to business. The Calcutta started off slow as the bidders watched each other for weakness but quickly heated up as the favourites to win came onto auction block. And thanks to some tricky tactics by our President and auctioneer there were very few dogs that did not at least get some confidence money put down on them. Read the rest of this entry »

If you own a lab or other retriever breed you know by now that they will put just about anything in their mouths that they can reach, especially the younger ones. Our dog is completely obsessed with eating the berries that litter our back yard. The yard has a giant mountain ash tree, also known as whitebeam, rowan or service tree. We got concerned and decided to figure out if it was harmful. It was not exactly easy to dig up information about plants that are toxic to dogs. We found that the ASPCA has a convenient online resource for checking if the plants in your yard, training or hunting area are dangerous to your four legged friends. Read the rest of this entry »

Having the Gun Help
This means that the gun station helps the dog who is lost in the field. Helping can take many forms. The gun can:
* Stand;
* Stand and Yell “Hey Hey”;
* Stand, Yell, Wave Arms and Walk Toward Mark;
* Stand, Yell, Wave Arms, Walk Toward the Mark and Throw the Bird Up
The gunner should help in response to a silent signal from the handler such as an arm wave, or to a request by radio. Yelling to signal the gun may attract the dog’s attention back to the handler. Read the rest of this entry »
